Our hearts are aching from the events that unfolded. Our minds cannot comprehend how such a tragedy could ever happen to the most innocent and precious among us. We just keep staring at this empty page because it is so difficult to write coherently and eloquently at a time like this, when all we want to do is curl up with our beautiful little nieces and nephews.
As our parish priest wisely put it, WHY? is something we want to cry out and ask God. Why is our world coming apart and shattering? Why must suffering exist? Why do the most beautiful little angels and the most heroic among us leave our earth so quickly? Unfortunately, the why is something we will never really be able to answer. We may come up with motives but that will not truly give us the sense of peace that we seek so fervently. Difficult as it may be, our priest tried to get us to think about a different one-word question. HOW? How do we go forth in faith, trusting His Plans and His Grace? How do we care for those who mourn, those whose broken hearts cry out for help, and those who are afflicted with the daily sorrow of loneliness? How do we give our lives in service to glorify Him? And most importantly, how do we give LOVE?
Our challenge to each other is based on achieving a higher level of fitness. But at the end of the day, it is to help us become better people and better give love to each other. We forget that second part so often, just like we take what we have and each other for granted so easily. Because when our time comes, what is truly important is not how many workouts we have done or how much good food we have given our bodies. What is truly important is the kind of people we are and how much love we have given to those around us.
We humbly pray that God provides peace to the innocent victims, healing and compassion to their devastated families, hope to our nation and our world, and forgiveness and mercy to the man who caused this unspeakable pain.
